King Balgruuf Fairhair was a Nordic ruler of the Kingdom of Haafingar and the first of the Fairhair Dynasty. His reign following the Imperial Interregnum marked the beginning of the Unification of Skyrim. He was elected king following the death of Magnus IV, who promoted Balgruuf from commoner to general in his short time as a soldier in Haafingar's military.

His reign was marked by a series of conquests in an effort to unify Skyrim under a single banner. Beginning with Hjaalmarch to the east and ending with Whiterun to the south, Balgruuf made incredible strides in earning territory for his kingdom. His sudden death due to cholera was a shock to the rulers of Skyrim, and even some of his most bitter enemies attended his funeral out of respect.
