— Benjen to General Cornelius III

Benjen Stark (also known as the last Dragonborn) is the main protagonist and hero of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Benjen is a lone wolf and specializes in sword and bow.

Benjen grew up with his brother Eddard in Winterfell. After Benjen was sent on a mission outside the wall of Westeros, he ended up in Skyrim on a much more dire mission.

Background[]

Benjen was born in Winterfell to his father, Lord Rickard Stark. He had two brothers and a sister, Brandon, Eddard, and Lyanna.

When Benjen was barely old enough to form full sentences, his mother died. This left a deep emotional void in Benjen's heart, heavily contributing to his 'lone wolf' personality and demeanor that he would eventually embrace as he got older. Benjen showed signs of independence at a very young age, preferring to spend time alone, and did not have any friends as a child. His father looked down upon him for this, and favored his other siblings over him. Benjen's brother Eddard (or Ned) pitied and loved Benjen however, and always stood up for him and tried to encourage him. The two brothers had a very strong relationship and not a single fight between them.

The Battle[]

When Benjen was fifteen years old, he was commanded to join his brother Eddard's unit in Robert Baratheon's rebellion, as a supporting soldier. Benjen hesitated, but was eventually given a sword and armor and thrown directly into combat at the bridge of King's Landing. After long hours of heavy combat and death, Targaryen soldiers launched wildfire explosives via catapult upon the bridge, blowing it to pieces and sending the entire unit pummeling to their doom. Benjen, Ned, and three other soldiers survived the fall, but were badly injured. Benjen was impaled with debris directly through the leg. Ned had wrapped the wound and ordered everyone to head immediately to the castle.

Unfortunately, the ragged group arrived too late and the boys' sister Lyanna had already been killed. Ned and Benjen were mortified, but not before the Mad King ordered their father and brother to be burned alive. These events scarred Benjen for life, and turned a once sweet, innocent boy into a cold, conceded warrior.

Jaime Lannister rushed to the grueling scene and stabbed the Mad King through the back, ending the battle and securing the throne for the new King, Robert Baratheon.

Early Adulthood[]

As an adult, Benjen was highly anti social, with the occasional exception of his brother. He would spend time in complete solitude for days at a time, reading books and practicing his archery and swordsman skills. When he reached age 24, he decided he had no other place in the world except for the Night's Watch.

His brother Ned was supportive of his choice, however would miss his brother dearly. The two hugged and spent a final day together before Benjen rode off north into the distance, fading away into the snow.

The Night's Watch[]

Benjen quickly rose in rank during his years in the Night's Watch, eventually escalating to First Ranger. Benjen was known to treat everyone fairly and respectfully.

Events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim[]

While manning the wall of Castle Black, First Ranger Benjen Stark is called upon to go north, beyond the wall, to investigate a mysterious crypt which has been unearthed from the snow. Benjen goes alone, and discovers that the White Walkers have returned. After barely escaping with his life, he informs Lord Commander Jeor Mormont. Mormont believes that something has awoken them from their ancient slumber, and Benjen agrees. Benjen is sent to Solitude to inform Queen Elisif.

After reaching Solitude, Benjen witnesses the execution of Roggvir - a former guard who allowed Ulfric Stormcloak - leader of the rebellion - to escape justice. After the grisly scene, Benjen reaches the Blue Palace. The Queen is in the middle of court, where Varnius Junius claims that strange noises are coming from Wolfskull Cave. The Queen offers to send a small legion to scour the area, though she does not believe it to be a concern. Benjen approaches, and informs the queen that the White Walkers have returned after ten thousand years in dormancy. The Queen does not believe him, and asks for proof. Benjen drops the severed head of a White Walker at her feet. The Queen, in shock, calls for General Tullius, who, upon arrival, requests that Imperial soldiers are sent to the wall. The request is declined by Jarl Korir of Winterhold.

Benjen returns to Castle Black.

After an arguement with Jarl Korir, Benjen rides to Windhelm to speak with Ulfric Stormcloak. The civil war rages on, and Benjen attempts to get the leaders to see reason. Upon reaching Windhelm, Benjen sees two Nord men bullying a Dark Elf female. Benjen reaches the Palace of the Kings and attempts to reason with Ulfric. Ulfric does not oblige.

Several weeks later, reports reach Castle Black of an attack on Helgen. Benjen rides south, and discovers that the military village was attacked by a dragon. In disbelief, Benjen looks for clues. He discovers an old journal, which mentions an Imperial soldier named Hadvar who attempted to help some of the civilians escape through the castle caverns. Benjen reaches the caverns and discovers that Hadvar has been wounded by a fallen boulder. Benjen gives Hadvar a healing potion and the two escape the cave as it collapses. Hadvar reveals that Ulfric Stormcloak had been captured and was being sentenced to execution, however, a massive black dragon had attacked. General Tullius was no where to be found, so Hadvar was hopeful that he had escaped.

Hadvar leads Benjen to his uncle Alvor's house in Riverwood. Alvor welcomes the two, and informs them that he had seen the dragon fly north. Alvor tells Benjen of the civil war, and of Jarl Balgruuf of Whiterun. Balgruuf attempts to have a neutral stance in the war, which is relatively unsuccessful. Alvor urges Benjen to inform the Jarl of the dragon attack, so that he can send soldiers to protect Riverwood.

Benjen arrives in Whiterun, and immediately heads for the Jarl's palace. After informing the Jarl, he directed to the court wizard. Benjen is sent to Bleak Falls Barrow to retrieve a 'Dragonstone' - an ancient map of dragon burial sites.
