At the end of the Fourth Era, the Eye of Magnus awoke and gazed upon Mundus - and judged it irreparable. Magnus decided he would undo his mistake, this trick by Lorkhan that cost so many of the et'Ada their lives, and turned his divine power against Mundus. The Eye wreaked havoc on Nirn and all those who wield magic - only to be stopped by King Coranth Masson of Evermor, who fought the divine avatar and won, and achieved apotheosis.
It is now the Fifth Era. Magic is forbidden across Tamriel, as those who wield it become slaves to Magnus' will. The High Elves of Summerset, who had become a slave race to Magnus following the Eye's awakening, have been all but eradicated, and those few that remain are Silenced - stripped of their magic power. Summerset is little more than a warped ruin, rife with unstable magic. It is also where the Magnite Sentries stand vigilant, protecting the cosmic wards that Coranth the Warden erected, for the Eye foretold that the Fifth Era will end when Magnus returns in person, and Mundus will be undone.
