He's a threat to the shadows and everything in them. Both those who live in them by choice, and those who are placed in the shadows of others. That's what I protect.

Nightingale is a Nightingale of Nocturnal who does not use his real name and never reveals his face, likely for a multitude of reasons. An enigmatic and mysterious person, virtually nothing is known about him.

Background

Nightingale's history is unknown. He was investigating Dalacon's laboratory the same time as the mercenaries and is motivated to bring down Goriyn Mortis. Other than that, his motives are his own and for others to find out.

Personality

I'll do worse than kill you! Hermius isn't here right now. Just me and a thirty foot drop. You can start talking or take your chances with the pavement.

— Nightingale

Nightingale is calm and controlled, obvious from initial encounters with him. He is also incredibly cautious, always watching others hands and movements, never taking his eyes off them, while keeping himself and his own hands shielded by his cape so that they cannot see what he is doing. Nightingale is mistrusting, preferring to work alone, but will compromise and join forces with others if it is necessary. While he doesn't laugh or smile, he has a dry wit which he uses on occasion, mostly to point things out that seem ironic or hypocritical to him

When Damien Hermius tries to hire Nightingale, Nightingale refuses his offer. This is because Nightingale doesn't consider himself a thief anymore, if he ever did, instead wholly taking the mantle of a Nightingale and serving only Nocturnal. He also didn't want to steal for Damien and refused to be corrupted by such a man. Nightingale also has a bit of a dark side. He has no qualms with using threats and torture to interrogate guilty persons. He also uses pain and fear as a method of deterrent. Since he follows the ways of the old Thieves' Guild and refuses to kill, he has had to find other ways to keep his enemies from trying to make attempts on his life and that has been by making them afraid of what Nightingale could do to them aside from killing.
