Whistles is the loyal horse of the Crimson Archer. The mercenary claims that the horse can speak, but no proof to the claim has been given.

Background[]

Crimson found Whistles in the Great Forest, near Chorrol. Either the steed was already broken, or Crimson broke it himself, but neither is clear. The horse was a companion to him from then on. Whistle gets his name because, no matter where Crimson is, if the archer whistles for the horse, he arrives.

Whistles has an evidently cocky attitude, claiming in conversation with the Crimson Archer (although no words are actually spoken) that he could single-handedly take on Jagar Tharn. Crimson responded by pointing out that Whistles lacks arms.

Whistles is apparently a rare breed of horse.  Crimson says the breed chooses their own riders and won't let any others ride them, to the point of bucking the intruding rider off.  He tells this to Juliette when she asks Crimson if she can ride Whistles some time.  Crimson assures her she can, he'll just have to convince the horse to allow it first.

Crimson eventually lets her ride Whistles, however, when the horse goes far beyond a natural speed, Juliette falls off and is seriously injured. Whistles has her remove it's helmet, revealed it's nature as a unicorn to her, and uses the magic of it's horn to heal her. Crimson found the unicorn when he'd left Taneth, and passed through the Great Forest. Apparently, Whistles had been friendly to humans because a little girl had taken care of it as a foal. Crimson managed to convince it to join his side since, he claims, unicorns are attracted to people of fame and charisma. Whistles actually can communicate, able to share his thoughts with people, although he rarely does this with anyone aside from Crimson.

Forty years after Reign of Chaos, Whistles is still Crimson's horse during Twelve Stars of Taneth.

Trivia[]

  • Whistles has communicated with, aside from Crimson, Shayera al Din, Juliette Tharn, and Tidon al Din, although the later two were not aware of it, incorrectly assuming that the thoughts Whistles implanted in them were their own.
